Hydroponics Grow Medium

The growing medium won't be able to grow anything on its own. If you placed plants in hydroponic growing media and watered it with plain water, the plants would starve from nutrient deficiency. It's simply there to help support the plant's weight as well as the moisture and oxygen the roots need. The nutrients the plants need are provided by the nutrient solution and is what the growing media is watered and moistened with. Some of the most widely used growing media's include  Rockwool, Grow Rock, Coco Fiber, Coco Chips, Perlite, Sand, and many more.

Hydro Experts offer you all kinds of soils and substrates for the successful cultivation of your demanding plants. Ranging from easy-to-handle coco substrates or various well-balanced soil mixtures up to clay pebbles as a perfect media for hydroponic systems. Furthermore, you can find perlite and rock wool starter blocks which are optimal for the propagation of seedlings and cuttings.

Grodan offers a crop-specific range of substrate slabs for vegetable growing, specifically for tomato, cucumber, sweet pepper and aubergine crops. Growers are increasingly focusing on desired crop development; this is partly determined by the variety that is selected, and the desired plant type. Factors that influence the choice of variety include the plant size, the required vine development with tomatoes or whether crops are grown under natural or grow lights. Propagators steer how to crop variety is propagated on the basis of cli ...

Quality differences in COCO substrate In 1998 the popularity of coco rose enormously causing a shortage of its raw material. As the leading potting mix and substrate producers could no longer ignore the product, they started to use raw material from new sources without considering the quality aspects. This resulted in huge crop damages, especially in France and the Netherlands. In order to prevent delivery problems in times of high needs CANNA went overseas and made substantial investments in local infrastructure. Concrete bunkers were buil ...

What is pH? pH (short for potential Hydrogen) is the measurement of acidity and its opposite, alkalinity in a solution. Neutral pH is 7.0 pH. Acidity measures below seven pH (7.0pH) with alkalinity measuring above it (7.0pH). Why is it important to measure pH? It is important to maintain a hydroponic nutrient solution at a pH level where the elements in the nutrient solution are consistently available to the plant. If the solution is too acidic or too alkaline it can cause ...

In the early 1950s, a resourceful gardener in the Norwegian city of Oslo invented the so-called Jiffypot®, a planting pot made from compressed peat, which becomes completely integrated with the root system and is transplanted with the plant – protecting the sensitive young seedlings from 'transplant shock'. With the Jiffy-7® peat pot, Jiffy created another milestone that is unmatched even today ...

Growool makes water-absorbent rockwool made in Australia and is used as a soilless growing medium. Growool consists of a mat of long, fine fibers, spun from natural molten rock. This mat is cut and shaped by Growool Horticultural Systems into the individual Growool products. When using the Growool system there is potential for greater control over plant growth and yield. These potential advantages are only released with very good management and attention to detail. Soilless systems do not guarantee success. They require better management than soil-based systems. We, at H ...

Q. I already use Trichoderma. Are mycorrhizal fungi any different? Both are beneficial fungi found naturally in soil. Trichoderma are more for cycling nutrients in the soil and providing protection against soil pests (but you will seldom find it labeled as a pest control) while mycorrhizal fungi help more with nutrient and water uptake and increased root growth. Both combined will prom ...
